rand.random January Thereâs a lot of things that happen to us that we simply donât think about, that we easily forget, that comprise the in-between points of time and space. But thanks to modern technology (particularly, in this case, Google photos and Snapchat) the random moments of daily life can be more easily recorded than ever before. So here is a random assortment of photos from throughout the duration of last year that I would not have any reason to share otherwise, and little captions of what was happening in them. I think itâs interesting to look back on all those little, unimportant things, and see how they were sometimes tied to big, important things. Or, more often, theyâre just fun, and, well, random. I tried to include at least one photo from every month of the year, and theyâre arranged in order. ( by the way, ârandomâ is a Python module that helps with generating pseudorandom numbers. Random.random() returns a pseudorandom number in the range [0.0, 1.0). ) January Guess where these photos are taken? I bet Addis Ababa, Ethiopia was not what you were thinking. In perhaps the msot culturally aligned experience I have ever had ever, during my trip to work on the Muti Water Project (see the blog post A Story About Muti) in January, I stopped for lunch at a Chinese hot pot place in Addis. A Research Study The Haemoglobinopathy, A Severe Blood...
Chapter 1 ââ¬â Introduction 1.1 Project Background The haemoglobinopathy, SCD is a severe blood disorder that is accountable for 33.5% per 100,000 hospital admissions in the UK (Aljuburi et al, 2012). The number of admissions has seen a steady increase over the last few years. In 1910, James Herrick was first to record that a Bajan male suffered from anaemia due to sickled red blood cells however in 1949 Linus Pauling identified that there was a molecular difference in the haemoglobin of a sickled and wild-type individual (Gabriel, A. and Przybylski, J., 2010). Ingram V. made the further observation that a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) resulting in valine instead of glutamic acid led to the conformational change in haemoglobin (Gabriel, A. and Przybylski, J., 2010). Although there is an increase of the disease in the UK, SCD has generally been classified as a disorder that affects African people. With an increasing rate of migration from Africa, Asia and West Indies into the UK this could be the explanation of the rise of admissions in UK hospitals. The British Medical Journal predicted that of 300,000 babies worldwide born with SCD a year only 2,000 of these babies are born in Europe (Brouse V et al, 2014). However, with an increasing number of interracial relationships the disease is likely to affect other ethnic backgrounds as the future comes. This project aims to research into the pathophysiology and treatment of SCD in adults and children. The research will

Judaism Its identity and position to society Free Essays
Judaism is more than a religion. It is the way of life of the Jewish people. Culture, customs, ethics, and sense of self ââ¬â these are a part of Judaism as much as the faith and the rituals of the Jewish religion. We will write a custom essay sample on Judaism: Its identity and position to society or any similar topic only for you Order Now A Jew can be defined in more than one way. Within Jewish law, being Jewish is a kind of citizenship. One is a Jew if one is born of a Jewish mother or has undergone a conversion. Conversion to Judaism is like a bestowal of citizenship ââ¬â it makes one a member of the people. A person who fits the legal definition of a Jew is recognized as a fellow Jew by the Jewish community. Even if a Jew does not share the religious beliefs of Jews and does not participate in the customs and practices of Judaism, one is still considered a Jew if he or she fits the legal definition. One could define a Jew religiously to the religious beliefs and practices of Judaism. A Jew is one believes in the One God, Creator and master of the Universe, the God with whom the people Israel have a special relationship. Many Jews believe God chose them to be his people. They follow the laws that God revealed to Moses. The Ten Commandments are the most important of these laws. In ancient times the Jews were the only people who worship a single, exclusive God, and the only people who worshiped without physical images of God. The Jews were resented by other people for not participating in the worship of all gods. This led to the accusation that Jews were antihumanitarian, since sharing gods was considered to be an act of friendship and universalistic concern for other people. When Christianity replaced the pagan religions of antiquity, the old misunderstanding of Jews did not die out. Added to it was the resentment that the Jews, Jesusââ¬â¢ own people, has not become Christians. Jews were protected under Christian law but were restricted in many ways. The laws in Christian lands called for Jews to be humiliated and despised in order to encourage Jewish conversions to Christianity. When Jews did not convert they were accused of stubbornness or spiritual blindness (Wylen). Judaism teaches that God is the God of all humankind and that He wants all people to serve Him by living their lives the way He wants. The guidelines for this lifestyle are set down in the Noachide Laws, the basic framework for a moral and spiritual life. They believe that every person is completely free to choose whether to do good or evil for God is completely free to do as He wishes, so are humans. Jews regard any religion which upholds the Noachide Laws as an acceptable way for non-Jews to serve God. This does not mean that they agree with everything that other religions teach, but that they can recognize some religions as pointing out a path to God. For this reason, Jews do not see the need to convert other people to their religion. In particular, Jews recognize that Islam teaches pure monotheism and that Muslims have a strict morality that upholds the principles of the Noachide Laws. The same may be said of the Sikh religion. Jews have always been less certain about Christianity. Although they acknowledge Christianityââ¬â¢s high moral principles, they feel uneasy about the Christian belief that Jesus is God. They are also unhappy about the use of images and icons in Catholic and Orthodox worship. They feel that this comes rather close to idolatry. Nonetheless, Jews have always recognized a special relationship with Christianity and Islam. Rabbi Judah Halevi, a twelfth-century scholar, described Judaism as the seed of the tree and Christianity and Islam as the branches, since through these religions, millions of people have come to worship the one God (Forta). At the turn of the twentieth century, a movement of interfaith dialogue between Jews and non-Jews served as a medium that facilitated the changes upon conflicts in religion. Although there had been some obstacle along the process, the interfaith dialogue helped to develop a better relationship between Jews and non-Jews in America. As a result it came into advancement of the well-being of the Jewish community in America. This interfaith dialogue took place in America in 1893 when the World Parliament of Religions (WPR) convened in Chicago bringing together Protestants, Catholics, Greek Orthodox Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, Bahai, Muslims, Native Americans and representatives of other faiths as well. It offered Jewish religious leaders such as Alexander Kohut, Isaac M. Wise, Kaufmann Kohler, Emil G. Hirsch, and Marcus Jastrow, an opportunity to present their views to a non-Jewish audience and make a case for Judaism (Kaplan). The majority of Jews, especially in North America, resided in religiously pluralistic communities where people of diverse backgrounds and faiths, including many who had themselves experienced religious persecution, live side by side. Perhaps for this reason, they felt more comfortable interacting with Christians than Jews did in most parts of the world ââ¬â so much so that we know of Jews and Christians who joined forces in business, witnessed each otherââ¬â¢s documents, and socialized in each otherââ¬â¢s homes (Bernardini and Fiering). Over the century new discoveries, new methods of manufacture, new social conditions have changed peopleââ¬â¢s way of living and thinking about the world. For Jews, this has always created the need to reapply the halakhah (Jewish religious law) to ever-changing conditions for living by halakhah is essential for Jews to fulfill their part of their covenant relationship with God. During this century advances in technology have led Jews to raise questions which could not have been thought of in earlier times ââ¬â questions about the use of automated electrical machinery on Sabbaths, whether computer hacking is theft, whether surrogate mother is permissible, whether a person on a life-support machine is alive or dead. To enable rabbis to answer this questions, up-to-date commentaries have been added to the Shulchan Aruch (written catalogue of halakhah), and whole books concerned with specific topics of halakhah are now being published. The continued reapplication of halakhah is an ongoing process (Forta). Works Cited Bernardini, Paolo, and Norman Fiering. The Jews and the Expansion of Europe to the West, 1450 to 1800. Intercultural communication Essay Example
Intercultural communication Paper Written intercultural communication problems also exist when businesses engage in global business operations and negotiation. The type of written document considered appropriate in one culture may not be considered appropriate in other cultures. Also, the formality needed in written documents may vary from culture to culture. Writing styles that are common in some cultures may be considered offensive in others. Content and style of written organizational communications are different among various cultures. In some cultures, direct approaches to messages are in use. However, in other cultures, the main message is preceded by several polite sentences that have little or nothing to do with the prime purpose of the message and may be followed by several polite or complimentary sentences that also bear little or no relationship to the communication purpose (Nelda, Barron, 1997). Strong positions are taken in written messages in some cultures; while in other cultures, such strong statements are considered improper. Attitudes and intentions of the communicator may be left to implications in these cultures. For instance, in Japan, most written communications are apologetic and include statements that put writers in lower positions. Japanese executives may view written documents received from US executives to be too bold, direct, and self-centered. On the other hand, Americans may perceive Japanese executives to be weak and without commitment to their positions (Nelda,Barron, 1997). When people using language during the negotiation , they must aware customs and practices that vary from culture to culture. Therefore, when American negotiator writing a business letter to the other party in Spain, the salutation of the letter should not contain the word dear. Kimberley (2003:177) suggested that nonverbal communication is an essential part of every message people send. Nonverbal communication means the information that is communicated without using words. People can communicated without saying a word by their choice of clothing, their facial expressions or any number of other nonverbal signals. No matter the negotiation is taken between two nations or within one nation, non-verbal communication has significant effect on the goal achievement in negotiation. There are various types of non-verbal communication, such as body language, time and clothing. Dealing with the language, which most international business people consider their only barrier to understanding, is actually only the beginning (Barna, 1972: 243). Non-verbal barriers to intercultural communication may create greater problems than language barriers. Various non-verbal cues carry different meanings in different cultures. When the individuals involved in the negotiation are of different cultures, there is likely to be some misinterpretations because of their chosen methods of communication. This is more likely to be the case if they are unfamiliar with each others cultural backgrounds. Herbig(1997) suggests that Negotiator should be aware that, when two people communicate, they seldom talk about precisely the same subject, for effective meaning is flavored by each persons own cognitive world and cultural conditioning. In some instances, conflict can occur where an individual has failed to recognize the boundaries that evolve from particular cultural characteristics. Take an example of negotiating in China. Chinese people often use body language that can be incomprehensible to unfamiliar Westerners, and some Western body language can be misunderstood. In China, laughing or smiling among people can be confusing and means different things according to the situation. When they felt nerves or embarrassed, Chinese people will smile or laugh nervously and cover their mouths with their hands. Pointing at someone with the forefinger is an accusatory motion and is considered rude or hostile Currier(2001) suggests that body language is basic building blocks of cooperation and negotiation. People are careful never to act in a way or that could be interpreted as an insult. Therefore, if the western negotiator misunderstand Chinese nonverbal message, they might feel confuse with the circumstance and the message has become ambiguity which probably might affect their decision. Also, when they use inappropriate body language, it may imply a meaning of disrespect and due to other partys antipathy. Nevertheless, negotiators can be conveying confidence by using body language if they uses appropriately. Axtell (1991:28) states that body language is as effective as or more effective than words. For instance, toward to the sexual difference aspect , men stand with their feet apart, expanding their space, or lean forward in their chairs-behaviors which are interpreted as aggressive. Women stand with their feet close together and one toe pointed inward, denoting submissiveness. Thus, to level the negotiating field, a woman should expand her space by standing to speak or using the arms of a chair and sitting erect when speaking. Time is important factor should be concerned during the negotiation process. Kimberley (2003:155) states that time are one type of nonverbal communication. People perceive time differs greatly from culture to culture. In the USA, time is a costly item that is not to be wasted. Time is scheduled carefully and holding to a time schedule is a virtue. Completing tasks ahead of schedule is usually something for which one should be proud. Americans do not like to wait and usually become irritated when someone is late for an appointment (Nelda, Baron, 1997). Therefore, when people negotiating with Americans, they should attend the meeting or appointment on time. In addition, Americans usually like to get down to business quickly in a meeting. People from other cultures, such as Japan, may be offended if a prolonged social discourse is not held prior to either partys mentioning the impending business. Even then, the discussion probably will proceed at a much slower pace than US business people are accustomed (Nelda, Baron, 1997). Lastly, Kimberly (2003:190) states that clothing gives a strong and immediate impression of its wearer, it is extremely importantly to nonverbal communication. Clothing develops a message, and by choosing particular clothing, the wearer commits himself or herself to the statements the clothing makes. It is no doubt that the dress of negotiators are implied a message to other party, such as if they are giving respect to the party they negotiated with. For instance, Thai business and government executives dress very formal. They perceive that the better dressed one is, the more successful one is. For business functions, farang men should wear lightweight suits with white shirts and ties. Slacks and jackets are not as acceptable. Farang women should not wear black dresses, however, for Thais reserve this color for funerals or mourning. However, black is acceptable to wear at formal events if it is accented with other colors. Consequently, when people are engage in negotiating with Thai people, they must dress appropriate in order to respect them and avoid embarrassed.

Profile of Spanish Dictator Francisco Franco
Profile of Spanish Dictator Francisco Franco Francisco Franco, the Spanish dictator and general, was perhaps Europes most successful fascist leader because he actually managed to survive in power until his natural death. (Obviously, we use successfully without any value judgment, were not saying he was a good idea, just that he curiously managed not to get beaten on a continent which saw a vast war against people like him.) He came to rule Spain by leading the right-wing forces in the civil war, which he won with Hitler and Mussolinis help and came to cling on by surviving against many odds, despite the brutality and murder of his government.à Early Career of Francisco Franco Franco was born into a naval family on Dec. 4à 1892. He wanted to be a sailor, but a reduction in admissions to the Spanish Naval Academy forced him to turn to the army, and he entered the Infantry Academy in 1907 aged 14. Upon completing this in 1910, he volunteered to go abroad and fight in Spanish Morocco and did so in 1912, soon winning a reputation for his ability, dedication, and care for his soldiers, but also one for brutality. By 1915 he was the youngest captain in the entire Spanish army. After recovering from a serious stomach wound he became second-in-command and then commander of the Spanish Foreign legion. By 1926 he was brigadier general and a national hero. Franco had not taken part in the coup of Primo de Rivera in 1923, but still became director of a new General Military Academy in 1928. However, this was dissolved following a revolution which expelled the monarchy and created the Spanish Second Republic. Franco, a monarchist, stayed largely quiet and loyal and was restored to command in 1932 - and promoted in 1933 - as a reward for not staging a right-wing coup. After being promoted to Major General in 1934 by a new rightist government, he savagely crushed a rebellion of miners. Many died, but he had raised his national reputation still further among the right, although the left hated him. In 1935 he became Chief of the Central General Staff of the Spanish Army and began to reforms. The Spanish Civil War As divisions between the left and the right in Spain grew, and as the countryââ¬â¢s unity unraveled after a left-wing alliance won power in elections, Franco appealed for a state of emergency to be declared. He feared a communist takeover. Instead, Franco was sacked from the General Staff and sent to the Canary Islands, where the government hoped he was too far away to start a coup. They were wrong. He eventually decided to join the planned right-wing rebellion, delayed by his sometimes mocked caution, and on July 18,à 1936, he telegraphed the news of a military rebellion from the Islands; this was followed by a rising on the mainland. He moved to Morocco, took control of the garrison army, and then landed it in Spain. After a march towards Madrid, Franco was chosen by the nationalist forces to be their head of state, due in part to his reputation, distance from political groups, the original figurehead had died, and partly because of his new hunger to lead. Francoââ¬â¢s nationalists, aided by German and Italian forces, fought a slow, careful war which was brutal and vicious. Franco wanted to do more than win, he wanted to ââ¬Ëcleanseââ¬â¢ Spain of communism. Consequently, he led the right to complete victory in 1939, whereupon there was no reconciliation: he drafted laws making any support for the republic a crime. During this period his government emerged, a military dictatorship supported, but still separate and above, a political party which merged Fascists and Carlists. The skill he exhibited in forming and holding together this political union of right-wing groups, each with their own competing visions for post-war Spain, has been called ââ¬Ëbrilliantââ¬â¢. World War and Cold War The first real ââ¬Ëpeacetimeââ¬â¢ test for Franco was the start of World War 2, in which Francoââ¬â¢s Spain initially lent towards the German-Italian Axis. However, Franco kept Spain out of the war, although this was less to do foresight, and more the result of Francoââ¬â¢s innate caution, Hitlerââ¬â¢s rejection of Francoââ¬â¢s high demands, and a recognition that the Spanish military was in no position to fight. The allies, including the US and Britain, gave Spain just enough aid to keep them neutral. Consequently, his regime survived the collapse and total defeat of his old civil-wartime supporters. Initial post-war hostility from the western European powers, and the US ââ¬â they viewed him as the last fascist dictator ââ¬â was overcome and Spain was rehabilitated as an anti-communist ally in the Cold War. Dictatorship During the war, and during the early years of his dictatorship, Francoââ¬â¢s government executed tens of thousands of ââ¬Å"rebelsâ⬠, imprisoned a quarter of a million, and crushed local traditions, leaving little opposition. Yet his repression loosened slightly over time as his government continued into the 1960s and the country transformed culturally into a modern nation. Spain also grew economically, in contrast to the authoritarian governments of Eastern Europe, although all this progress was more due to a new generation of young thinkers and politicians than to Franco himself, who became increasingly distant from the real world. Franco also became increasingly viewed as above the actions and decisions of subordinates who took the blame went things went wrong and earned an international reputation for developing and surviving. Plans and Death In 1947 Franco had passed a referendum which effectively made Spain a monarchy headed by him for life, and in 1969 he announced his official successor: Prince Juan Carlos, eldest son of the leading claimant to the Spanish throne. Shortly before this, he had allowed limited elections to parliament, and in 1973 he resigned from some power, remaining as head of the state, military, and party. Having suffered from Parkinsonââ¬â¢s for many years ââ¬â he kept the condition secret - he died in 1975 following a protracted illness. Three years later Juan Carlos had peacefully reintroduced democracy; Spain had become a modern constitutional monarchy. Personality Franco was a serious character, even as a child, when his short stature and high pitched voice caused him to be bullied. He could be sentimental over trivial issues, but exhibited an icy coldness over anything serious, and appeared capable of removing himself from the reality of death. He despised communism and Freemasonry, which he feared would take over Spain and disliked both east and west Europe in the post-World War II world.
